Budgeting and Fiscal Management
Graduates should possess an understanding of and appreciation for the dynamics
involved in utilizing financial resources in the implementation of student affairs
programs and services. Specifically, students should be able to:
a) develop and defend a budget to support a student affairs program,
b) perform all of the functions necessary to access and manage those resources which
have been dedicated to a student affairs programs,
c) write a grant and/or develop other avenues for funding sources outside the institution.

Hooding Ceremony
In my assistantship for the leadership minor department, I was asked to help in planning the winter 2012 hooding ceremony for Master of Arts in Leadership. The coordinator of the leadership minor department usually planned this event but since she was a student in the program being hooded she released her responsibilities. A professor and another graduate assistant and myself shared the duties in planning the ceremony. I met with the Banquet Manager of Hospitality Services, in choosing the décor and food for the evening. She would correspond with our team in making sure we stayed within the budget. I was told to stay below $2,000 dollars and to my surprise we stayed under budget due to a $300 discount we recieved. I learned to prioritize the costs by overestimating the costs to help me remain conservative.

Budget Proposal
In Administration in College Student Affairs course I was assigned to develop a budget proposal. The proposal included a written rationale for the request being made and a detailed budget, including a recommendation on sources of funding. I proposed a position at Chaffey Community College. The position was a Puente Apprentice. I described the duties, purpose learning outcomes and used theory to back up my proposal. One major duty of the apprentice would be to teach hope theory to the Puenete students though hope workshops. Studies show many students experience elevated psychological distress during their 1st year at college. A study was conducted proving students achieved higher levels of hope following workshops that educate student about hope theory while also receiving higher grades in the semester following the intervention (Davidson, Feldman, and Margalit, 2012).

College Affordability
In Foundations of Higher Education I wrote a critical issue paper regarding college affordability. Unfortunately, many Americans face issues in not being able to afford higher education. Sadly, being able to attend college has become a privilege, not a right. I identified contrasting positions surrounding the topic. I explored community college and public four year institutions’ tuition increase. Last year tuitions reported the average yearly cost for community colleges was $3,264, state colleges $8,893, and public four year institutions $22,203, (Weiss, 2014). Through the paper I argued my opinion of the challenges students are facing due to the immense college tuition increase.
